Reasons for the Project

The Holmes DNA Project is intended to collect information that will assist participants in researching their Holmes family histories. DNA information is a valuable supplement to information available through traditional sources.

The surname Holmes seems to be most prominent in the north of England. However, the name originated as a place name, indicating land near water, and may be found in many parts of England and in southwestern Scotland. It may also be found among descendants of the Home (pronounced Hume) family of the Scottish Borders area.

As the number of participants from various Holmes families grows, it is anticipated that it will be possible to determine which Holmes families are closely related. Sharing of information among these related Holmes families can provide a wealth of additional information on early family origins.
